What a wonderful feeling there is when one belongs to something important in his or her life. The child adopted, the teammate selected, the employee hired -- all of them sense this warm feeling.
Belonging is part of the Christian experience, as well. No longer "strangers," "guests," or "visitors," but now members of Christ's Family the Church, we know that we are part of the caring fellowship of Jesus Christ.
At First Church, two routes to membership are provided depending on one's age.
Teenagers in eighth grade or higher are offered confirmation courses which involve several months of study, projects, and participation. Most parts of this study are led by our pastor, and each student is provided with a mentor from among the members of First Church.
Adults are offered a different route to membership: they are asked to inform our church office of their desire to join either by indicating their interest on the pew registration pad (at Sunday morning worship) or by contacting our pastoral staff. The next step is to meet with our pastor to schedule time to explore our Presbyterian/Reformed polity, values, beliefs, practices and the workings of our church. Finally, those who wish to join will meet with representatives of our governing body, the Session, to be welcomed into membership.
