Book Studies

About our book studies.

Sunday School Classes

Nursery Class

Through loving care, songs, and play, infants and toddlers can experience the reality of God’s love expressed in Christian community. Children ages birth—Pre-K are invited to learn about God’s love each Sunday in the Nursery, located on the main level.

Kingdom Kids

Children who are in grades K-5 are invited to join in the fun on Sunday mornings in Kingdom Hall, located in the lower level! Kingdom Kids uses Seasons of the Spirit, a curriculum based on the Revised Common Lectionary. Each week, the young learners will study the same scriptures that will be used in worship that Sunday. Kingdom Kids uses a multi-intelligences approach, so kids learn using all of their senses and skills. Through art, games, music, and story, children encounter Bible stories and themes in new and exciting ways.

Jr. High Class

Using the Bible, Jr. High students gather each Sunday to become familiar with basic foundational stories of the Old and New Testaments.  In this study, the students will learn the major themes of the Bible (covenant, faithfulness, transformation, sin, justice, stewardship).  Throughout this process the students will also understand how the Bible functions as literature.  The Class meets on the upper level.

Confirmation Class

If you think that “Ecclesia reformata, semper reformanda” is something that Harry Potter might say… If you think that election is all about picking government officials… If you think that Lent is something that you clean out of your clothes dryer… then this class is for you! The Confirmation Class introduces students to the basics of the Christian faith as it is lived out in the Presbyterian Church (USA). This class prepares students to enter into active membership in the PC(USA) at the First Presbyterian Church of Macomb.  This class is offered as needed (will be offered Fall 2010) and all students who are currently in grades 8-12 are welcome to join.

Adult Lectionary Class

Each Sunday, adults are invited to gather in the Conference Room, located on the main level, to discuss the lectionary scripture readings that are scheduled for that day.

Adult Modern Media Class

Using a variety of books, videos, study guides, and personal testimonies, the Adult Modern Media Class explores a variety of current topics as Peacemaking, Church History, Theologians, and Mission.

Our current study, Uppity Women of the Bible features Hebrew Bible professor Dr. Lisa Wolfe. Combining careful scholarship with humor and fresh insights, Dr. Wolfe's presentations foster lively, thoughtful discussion of Ruth, The Song of Songs, Esther and Judith.  Our first session takes you on an enlightening journey through the Book of Ruth with a lively and thoughtful examination. Dr. Wolfe considers the vulnerability of widows and the difficult situation of foreigners in biblical times. She explores themes of loyalty, bitterness, courage, poverty and seduction. What really happened on the threshing room floor? Combining humor and careful scholarship, this study invites you to re-read the book with new insight and understanding for all its characters, especially the intelligent, confident – even uppity – heroine Ruth.

Our class meets at 9 AM Sundays in Conference Room II.

Our recent studies have included:

Library

The Library is located on the main level.  A variety of materials are available for research and more casual reading.  Additions to the collection are made on a regular basis. New materials are featured on a book cart during Sunday morning fellowship time.
